Focus: Outlaws and Outsiders – Cinematic Insights Into the Margins Of Japanese Society

Compared to Western countries that center around the individual, Japanese society has a strong, collectivist mentality. Outsiders who fail or refuse to fit in with the accepted norms often face various hardships. Current Japanese films tell numerous stories about outlaws and outsiders trying to find their own way outside of social expectations. NIPPON CONNECTION aims to shed a light on an aspect of Japanese society that is often overlooked.

Topics like the difficult situation of sexual or ethnic minorities, of the unemployed and homeless, or of people suffering from social pressure will be presented not only in film screenings, but also in talks with filmmakers, lectures, and a panel discussion. After the festival, selected films will have additional screenings in cinemas throughout the Rhein-Main region (dates will be communicated on the festival website NipponConnection.com).

The focus “Outlaws und Außenseiter – Filmische Einblicke in die Randzonen der japanischen Gesellschaft” is supported by Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain.
